Host Travels with Guests
Host plans the trip and travels with the group throughout the journey from arrival to departure.
Southern Heritage is an 11-day, 10-night journey through the living landscapes and cultural heartlands of South India — Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Beginning with an early arrival in Kochi (Nov 21) you’ll ease into the trip with Fort Kochi sightseeing and a restful stay at Baymaas Lakehouse before heading to Alleppey for a full-day cruise on a private houseboat through the serene Kerala backwaters. From there the route climbs into the cool tea country of Munnar (Nov 23–25) with waterfalls, plantation drives, mountain viewpoints and a special pre-dawn jeep excursion to catch spectacular high-elevation sunrises. The itinerary continues to Madurai (Nov 26–28) to experience the splendour of the Meenakshi Amman Temple and Tamil cultural cuisine, then a short flight to Bengaluru (Nov 28–Dec 1) for relaxed city exploration from a comfortable Indiranagar base before your evening departure to the USA on Dec 1. Expect a balanced pace of immersive cultural and natural highlights: historic ports and colonial-era Fort Kochi, peaceful houseboat life in Alleppey, lush tea estates and dramatic mountain vistas in Munnar, and centuries-old temple rituals and local flavors in Madurai, capped by cosmopolitan Bengaluru. Accommodations range from lakehouse and private houseboat to boutique mountain and heritage resorts and a city home base, with private transfers and curated sightseeing built in so you can savor sunsets, spice markets, temple ceremonies and South Indian cuisine without rushing.

Program Manager
I was born and raised in Bengaluru, India, and now call the United States home. As the founder of IndianAlly, I combine my local understanding of India with my experience as an international traveler. With more than 14 years of experience organizing travel, I help guests experience India authentically, comfortably, and meaningfully. Having traveled to more than 14 countries, I understand the excitement and uncertainty of visiting an unfamiliar destination. I help with translation, bargaining, local customs, food choices, logistics, and avoiding common tourist scams. When applicable, I travel with guests from the United States and host them throughout their journey, from arrival through departure. I speak English, Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Urdu, and understand Malayalam. My small-group trips—generally limited to 10 travelers—offer personal attention, thoughtful planning, and a deeper connection to India’s people, food, culture, traditions, heritage, natural beauty, and hidden local gems.

Is South India a good destination for first-time visitors to India?
Yes. South India offers a wonderful introduction to the country, with welcoming people, beautiful landscapes, historic temples, tropical backwaters, hill stations, beaches, and distinctive regional cuisine. Traveling with a local host makes navigating cultural differences, transportation, language, and food much easier.
Is South India safe for western travelers?
South India is generally welcoming to international visitors. As with any destination, travelers should remain aware of their surroundings, protect their belongings, avoid isolated areas at night, and follow local guidance. Your host will help you avoid common tourist scams and navigate each destination confidently.
Do I need a visa to visit India?
Yes. U.S/UK/EU. citizens generally need a valid passport and an approved Indian visa before traveling. Visa rules can change, so travelers should verify the latest requirements through the official Government of India visa website. Your host can provide guidance, but each traveler is responsible for obtaining the correct visa.
Will I experience a language barrier?
English is widely used in hotels, airports, restaurants, and major tourist areas. However, regional languages such as Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada are commonly spoken in daily life. Your host can assist with translation, local communication, bargaining, and cultural nuances throughout the trip.
Is South Indian food very spicy?
Some dishes can be spicy, but not everything is. Spice levels can usually be adjusted, especially at hotels and tourist-friendly restaurants. South India also offers many mild dishes made with rice, coconut, lentils, vegetables, seafood, chicken, and fresh spices. Your host can help you choose food based on your preferences and comfort level.
Is vegetarian food easily available?
Yes. South India is one of the easiest places in the world to travel as a vegetarian. Vegetarian meals are widely available, and many restaurants serve only vegetarian food. Vegan, gluten-sensitive, and other dietary preferences can often be accommodated with advance notice, although travelers with serious allergies should take additional precautions
Is it safe to drink tap water?
Travelers should avoid drinking tap water. Use sealed bottled water or properly filtered water, including when brushing your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach. Your host will help ensure safe drinking water is available during the trip
What should I wear in South India?
Lightweight, breathable clothing works well in most locations . One thin jacket is recommended in the mountains in November where temperatures may drop to mid 40s in the mornings. Modest clothing is recommended when visiting temples, churches, mosques, villages, and traditional communities.
Do women need to dress differently?
Women are not expected to wear traditional Indian clothing, but modest clothing can help travelers feel more comfortable and show respect for local customs.
Will electrical outlets work with American devices?
India uses different plug types and operates on a different voltage than the United States. Most modern phones, laptops, and camera chargers support both voltages, but travelers should check each device before using it. A universal travel adapter is recommended.
Is bargaining expected?
Bargaining is common in markets and some independent shops but is not appropriate everywhere. Fixed-price stores, malls, hotels, and restaurants generally do not negotiate. Your host can help determine when bargaining is appropriate and assist you in receiving a fair price.
How physically demanding are the trips?
Most activities are suitable for travelers with average mobility, but uneven walkways, stairs, and longer driving days may be involved. Optional activities can often be adjusted according to the traveler’s energy and comfort level. Guests should review the itinerary and disclose mobility concerns before booking.
What if I become sick during the trip?
Inform your host immediately. Your host can assist with locating an appropriate pharmacy, clinic, or hospital and help with communication and transportation. Travelers remain responsible for medical expenses, which is another reason travel medical insurance is recommended.
Can the itinerary be adjusted if I feel tired?
Yes, where practical. Although transit days and scheduled reservations may be fixed, many daily activities can be adjusted according to the group’s energy, weather, and comfort. The goal is to enjoy South India—not to rush through a checklist.
What makes a hosted trip different from traveling independently?
A hosted journey combines the convenience of an organized trip with the personal experience of traveling alongside someone who understands the destination. Your host assists with language, food, local customs, transportation, bargaining, safety, and unexpected situations while introducing you to experiences that can be difficult to find independently.
